Fashion Survey - Budding local fashion designer needs your help!

luna's picture

Hello all, I’m a fashion design student at the Vancouver College of Art and Design and I’m doing a survey for one of my class research assignments. I’d like to hear your opinion on style and gather some information on the niche gothic scene in the Vancouver fashion industry.

This survey is aimed towards Miriam's local shop Flaming Angels Boutique (on main), but if you've just been to deadly couture, venus and mars, etc., those shops can apply too (although I'd recommend checking out Flaming Angel's either way). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

1) Do you shop here for everyday or special occasion clothing?

2) Are you morally opposed to leather? (would you rather wear fake “leather”…?)

3) What style of music do you prefer? (classical, metal, electronic, industrial, ect.)

4) How would you describe your style?

5) What are the dominant colors in your wardrobe?

6) What would you consider more important, comfort or style?

7) How often do you buy clothing?

8) Have you ever made/altered your own clothing?

9) Is buying locally important to you?

10) Do you prefer handmade to mass manufactured clothing?

1) Do you shop here for everyday or special occasion clothing?
I have bought both everyday and occasion wear, but like Atratus only before the move.

2) Are you morally opposed to leather? (would you rather wear fake “leather”…?)
I'm opposed to fake leather for various reasons.

3) What style of music do you prefer? (classical, metal, electronic, industrial, ect.)
Deathrock, darkwave, goth (heavy on the 90's swirlygoth), and music from the late Romantic period. I also like EBM and industrial. And trip-hop and darkwave. And new wave. This is not a good question to ask DJs. :p

4) How would you describe your style?
Very sparkly romanti-goth. Occasionally I'm extremely pink. When I'm not at clubs I look the same but less fancy, and with a tendancy towards really warm things.

5) What are the dominant colors in your wardrobe?
Black, pink, dark red. Some purple and blue as well.

6) What would you consider more important, comfort or style?
If it doesn't look good, I won't try it on to find out if it's comfortable.

7) How often do you buy clothing?
Usually one large spree every season.

8) Have you ever made/altered your own clothing?
Both, frequently.

9) Is buying locally important to you?
Yes, but so is supporting the scene. Also, spending a reasonable amount of money trumps both these things - a tiered velvet skirt is a tiered velvet skirt whether it's from Rose Mortem or H&M.

10) Do you prefer handmade to mass manufactured clothing?
I'm not particular, as long as it's well-made.

1) Do you shop here for everyday or special occasion clothing?

I haven't been to Flaming Angels since the move. Regardless, as much as I like Myriam's designs, they don't really work for someone with my build.

2) Are you morally opposed to leather? (would you rather wear fake “leather”…?)

I am heartily in favour of leather. I wear it daily.

3) What style of music do you prefer? (classical, metal, electronic, industrial, ect.)

Old-school goth, '77 punk, deathrock, Batcave, Scottish/Celtic punk, classic jazz, "Rat-Pack"-style jazz, 18th & 19th c. classical (i.e. Classical and Romantic), Celtic and Celtic-based country, and several other things as the mood strikes me.

4) How would you describe your style?

Understated for day-to-day, formal/Romantigoth for the club

5) What are the dominant colors in your wardrobe?

Black, red, dark blues, purple.

6) What would you consider more important, comfort or style?

Day-to-day, comfort. At the club, style.

7) How often do you buy clothing?

Irregularly.

8) Have you ever made/altered your own clothing?

Yes. Altering more than make.

9) Is buying locally important to you?

Yes. Equally important is supporting people who may not be local, but are independent and contribute to the scene, e.g. Kambriel.

10) Do you prefer handmade to mass manufactured clothing?

Quality tailoring is what matters to me, i.e. I don't care how it is made, as long as it is made well.

1) What I don't make or alter myself, I buy at Deadly Couture or New World. I sometimes buy from online stores; Lip Service.
2) I eat the meat so I'll wear the hide.
3) Eclectic blend of 80's, house, goth, new wave, metal, new world. Anything with a strong beat and good hooks.
4) I wear what suits me from office chic to biker chick to out 'there' somewhere....I'm told I always look good.
5) Hot colours; strong pink, purple, turquoise, red, black.
6) Both equally. I'm not a slave to fashion and it has to work to be in the wardrobe.
7) One or twice a month I'll find a couple of pieces from various sources.
8) Yes, frequently. I'm a trained seamstress.
9) Only if it looks good, fits and is affordable.
10) Neither. Same as above.
