Photographers
I was in a bit of a mathematically-minded mood tonight and decided to do up a chart of the percentage of photographs contributed to the photo gallery by all the photographers. Of the 20,000+ photos in the gallery, nearly 65% are ones of mine. Considering he's only been contributing for a relatively short time Mykl makes up a very respectable 7% already.
I'd dearly like it if more people contributed to the gallery and the site in general, but what to do? Of course the 1% rule (also known as the 90-9-1 rule) applies: 1% of users create the content, 9% interact with it occasionally, and the other 90% lurk and never contribute. It's also hard to compete with the big social networking sites. Gothic BC is never going to be a Facebook or mySpace, or even VampireFreaks - nor do I want it to be - but I hate the thought of all the pictures and memories out there that are only there for the few minutes while the memory is fresh and then fade away forever.
I have an old banker-box of photographs. One of them is a picture of my mom, dad, an aunt and an uncle whooping it up at The Cave - a long-gone Vancouver nightclub that closed over 30 years ago. Is my generation the last one that will find images like this? I have this wonderful momento from when my parents were young and hip. In the age of digital photography and social-websites-du-jour there won't be any shoe-box in the attic with finds like this for our heirs to discover.
Maybe it is time to pull together a Gothic BC book...
