A common question we often get in our mainstream society is, "What is Goth?". It's an inquiry that has come up so much that the artist, Voltaire, actually wrote a whole book to answer to satisfy the inquisitive. He wrote it because he was exhausted of explaining to people on aeroplanes while touring what genre of music he performs. His book, "What is Goth?", has become an easy answer for those of us who are tired of hearing that question and a complete answer for anyone who is curious enough to pursue it.

World Goth Day is a time to make the presence of the alternative Gothic culture well known throughout all of society. It all started from a UK Goth Day celebration in 2009 and has since grown into a international event with cities participating around the globe. World Goth Day is officially May 22 but Descent will be celebrating its unity with the world wide community on our usual event day, Sunday May 24. Take part in your world wide community to voice your solidarity for the dark, alternative fashion and lifestyle with this local event. Come out wearing something comfortable or your best Gothic clothes to meet your fellow creatures of the night and party hard and loud enough to wake up the city of Vancouver!

Join your local community for Vancouver's best place to dance to Goth, Industrial, EBM, and Metal. Our Resident DJs Surreal, Spaz, Nero, and Mori will be in control of the decks and will of course be taking your requests. Make sure that you don't miss this epic party! Be a part of your alternative culture and dare to be different. Make the Descent!

Voltaire's book may be funny

Voltaire's book may be funny but it does not emphasize the main point: Goth is a rejection of the mainstream culture.
"To the mundane," Voltaire writes, "Goths are weird, black-clad freaks who are obsessed with death; they are sad all of the time. Take a closer look at the Goth scene, however, and you will find a rich tapestry of ideas and practices and a menagerie of colorful characters. Oh, dear. I said 'colorful.'" Yes, Goths are pale, wear black clothing, love black makeup (on men and women), mope, listen to real downer music, and perfect the art of living in a perpetual state of ennui and melancholy. But there's so much more to being Goth. Goths come from all walks of life. Many are teenagers who live with their parents; others are doctors, lawyers, musicians, and so on. Most Goths are highly literate and creative, but all real Goths have to dress the part….

To a great extent it downplays the essence of Goth being a protest, a rebellion. Goth belongs to the same category hippie, punk, bikers do. Sometimes called subcultures what they are actually not. Sub to what? “Alternative cultures” sound more towards a correct description.
It is not a secret to any thinking individual the mainstream culture is simply put stupid: consumerism, slavery to corporations, plastic politicians, plastic people, plastic entertainment, suppression of individuality and rational thought, deficient education, junk science, junk food, fake medicine, fake religions, human consciousness and the true sense of reality under constant propaganda attack. It should make everybody puke and step out putting end to the world as we know it.
In this regard asking the mainstream to accept and embrace the Goth makes no sense whatsoever. We are stepping outside of Matrix. The main character Neo in the movie wore classic goth long coat not by accident. The Matrix is there to destroy us not to embrace.
Goth is not political though, it tries to create a refuge, an illusive world with beauty, spirituality and true feelings. This is what we celebrate. We are moving to the right direction.
