Another picnic has been planned for June 12.

May 22nd 2011 - World Goth Day
May 22nd is World Goth Day, https://www.worldgothday.com, a fun idea where everyone within your city can join up and celebrate the dark subculture.
Anyone else is up to this idea? May 22nd is a Sunday so depending on everyone's schedule, it might not be the best day. Let's all agree on a day and time to host the event.
As for the event itself, I heard someone was planning on a Gothnic within Vancouver/Lower Mainland. I think that would be perfect to do something in May at a local cemetery or park. I would love to help out in any way I can, as well as baking very suitable cakes (in both non-vegan & vegan friendly recipes)
The 23rd is Victoria Day, so it *is* a long weekend.
Something easily accessible by transit would be a must for me.
What about the Nitobe Japanese Garden at UBC? The cherry trees should still have some bloom on them in May. And since it isn't a Vancouver city park, smoking isn't illegal.
Great place! I totally forgot about that no smoking rule in city parks. I did a quick search on Nitobe and it looks like there's an entrance fee: http://www.nitobe.org :(
Unless you're thinking of just being around that area and not actually go into the garden itself. Just trying to avoid fees altogether so it doesn't discourage a lot of people from going to the Gothnic.
Don't want this to sound like a cliche but I was thinking of the Mountain View Cemetery (5455 Fraser St). Buses run by it and there's plenty of parking as well. If I remember correctly, there are buses from Joyce Stn, 29th Ave Stn and on Broadway & Fraser Street that'll go by the cemetery.
I checked around the main website, http://vancouver.ca/cemetery/ and found nothing for any rules or by-laws in regards to smoking and hosting a picnic there. I just sent out a formal email to the Mountain View Cemetery for their stand on having a picnic & smoking policies.
How about the UBC Rose Gardens? Plenty of shade, nice scenery and a great view looking out the Strait of Georgia.
