Hello, everyone!

I'm new to this forum, and should properly introduce myself, but I found this tidbit in the current issue of Maclean's magazine (April 3, 2006; page 13) and felt I had to share it with you all right away.  The piece in its entirety reads:

"THE GOTHS ARE OKAY"

"They might look deathly, but the pallid makeup, black hair, jewellery and piercings that are the trademarks of Goths do not mean your children are on the early road to ruin.  A study by the University of Sussex in England has concluded that, unlike punks, Goths grow up to be lawyers, doctors and other professionals.  Researchers say the look is merely a rebellious interregnum in an otherwise middle-class life."

So, what do you think?  Did the good people at the University of Sussex get it right?

Thanks for reading and have a great day (or night, depending on when you're seeing this.)

Hella Storm.

"Goths grow up to be lawyers, doctors and other professionals."

Possibly because the goth look and subculture tends to attract a more sophisticated and intelligent type of person than, say, punks or metalheads (I do admit this is a generalisation). I'd agree that its more a fashion statement than any rebellious urges, although the philosophies and attitudes traditionally associated with goths can be considered to be highly rebellious (though not necisarily violent or revolutionary) in comparision to more traditional views. But this will depend from person to person. It always does.

That's my take on things.

Thanks for the info there Hella Storm. It's very comforting to know that I'm not on the road to ruin. Mind you, I wouldn't say the look is so much rebellious. It's really more of a fashion statement. At least that's my opinion.
